Schönes Wochenende

We’ve had a gorgeous weekend.  Temperatures hit 91° yesterday and 70° today, with continual sunshine.  We rode our bikes around a lot both days, shopping downtown yesterday and taking a harbour tour today.  Nothing too exciting happened, but we had a reminder yesterday that German culture isn’t quite like America culture.

In Karstadt, one of the nicer department stores in the city, we were looking through the lingerie section.  We noticed a small room behind the lingerie section that had some leather underwear in the doorway.  So, we poked our heads in.  They had a lot more interesting leather underwear, pornography, whips, crops, and expensive glass dildos.  I’ve definitely never seen such goods for sale in respectable stores in America, but it just doesn’t have the stigma here.

Of course, this is a country in which two TV stations turn into soft core porn at midnight and last night another station hid nothing in a Playboy documentary during prime time.

I think the stigma’s a little greater in St. Louis that out here in SF. When my brother and his wife came out to visit on their anniversary, I got them a gift certificate to Good Vibrations ( I don’t know what they got. I don’t wanna know.

Stores like Good Vibrations exist in all major cities in the U.S., even in St. Louis. However, do the San Francisco locations of Neiman-Marcus, Marshall Field’s, Macy’s, and Nordstrom have sex toy sections? That’s the difference I saw.
